Nelia Sancho NELIA SANCHO
1971 Miss Philippines Queen of the Pacific

Nelia Sancho is the second Philippine representative to win the Queen of the Pacific crown in 1971 at the Moomba, Australia's largest festival. She was first runner-up to Gloria Diaz & Margaret Rose Montinola in the 1969 Binibining Pilipinas Beauty Pageant.
HISTORY OF MOOMBA p. 22 d. 02/17/06 has this thing to say about Nelia:"Following her Moomba interlude, Sancho was arrested in the Philippines first in 1973 and then in 1976. The by then politicized Sancho was charged with subversion for allegedly being the treasurer of the outlawed Communist Party and for illegally possesing a firearm. Ten years after her second arrest (at which time she was imprisoned for 28 months), the Age reported that Sancho was the organiser of the 1986 International Women's Day in Manila. She is now the Filipino coordinator of the Asian Women's Human Rights Council. Needless to say, there's a delightful irony in Sancho's carreer path from beauty queen to women's rights activitist."
