Teresita Torralba Sanchez was crowned on April 26, 1952 by the Mayor of Manila, Arsenio Lacson at the Fiesta Pavilion of Manila Hotel. Notable candidate during her year was a mestiza from Gapan, Nueva Ecija named Dorothy Jones who became a famous Filipino actress, Nida Blanca † (January 6, 1936 November 7, 2001). Other winners were: Miss Luzon, Carmen Ortega; Miss Visayas, Jean Arquiza; Miss Mindanao, Emma Nepomuceno; and Miss Manila, Carmencita Fernandez. Teresita Torralba Sanchez represented the Philippines in the first ever Miss Universe Beauty Contest held in Long Beach, California.

1953 Miss Philippines International Fair


Maria Cristina Galang was crowned Miss Philippines during the first ever international fair to be held in Manila in 1953 by the reigning Miss Universe Armi Kuusela and the 1952 Miss Philippines Teresita Sanchez. Cristina was originally chosen by the pageant committee to represent the Philippines in the 1953 Miss Universe Contest in Long Beach but it did not materialize for some reasons.

Miss Philippines 1953


Cristina Monson Pacheco was crowned Miss Philippines at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila Hotel on June 28, 1953. Other winners that night were Miss Luzon, Janet Hart; Miss Visayas, Eleanor Medina; Miss Mindanao, Gloria Tupas; and Miss Manila, Amelia Crame. Cristina left for Los Angeles on July 6 to join the other contestants before going to Long Beach for the Miss Universe Beauty Contest.

Bessie Ocampo BLESILDA OCAMPO †
Miss Philippines 1954


Maria Candida Blesilda "Bessie" Mueler Ocampo was crowned Miss Philippines on December 19, 1953 at the Boys Town Auditorium. Her court consisted of Baby Vergel de Dios who was Miss Luzon, Monette Tambunting was chosen as Miss Visayas and Maja Fernandez was Miss Mindanao. She found out that she's the official candidate of the Philippines to the Miss Universe contest while she was in London as one of the prizes of the local contest. She flew in to Los Angeles together with the delegates from Europe on July 11 after she confirmed the news. She ended up as one of the semi-finalists in the 1954 Miss Universe Beauty contest.

Maria Teresa Larrazabal shared the limelights with Bessie Ocampo as one of the two Misses Philippines of 1954. Her royal court was composed of Miss Luzon Dativa Reyes, Miss Visayas Gloria Galla (Romero) and Miss Mindanao Ruby Corpus.

In 1954, there were two Miss Philippines searches going on around the country. One was organized by Boys Town Philippines that was won by Blesilda Ocampo and the other one by the Philippine International Fair that was won by Maria Teresa Larrazabal. Gloria Galla, known as Gloria Romero in the Philippine movie world was a budding starlet when she joined the search for Miss Philippines International Fair of 1954 placing third in the ballot voting earning the title of Miss Visayas.

YVONNE DE LOS REYES
Miss Philippines 1955


Yvonne Berenguer de los Reyes was crowned on March 12, 1955 at the Cavalcade Hall Auditorium of United Nations Plaza. Other winners included Lucy del Prado, Miss Luzon; Annie Gonzales, Miss Visayas; and Annie Corrales, Miss Mindanao. Annie became a Miss Philippines as well on her third try in 1957. Yvonne is the cousin of the 1954 Miss Philippines Blesilda Ocampo & 1929 Carnival Queen Pacita de los Reyes, and the sister of the 1970 Binibining Pilipinas Universe, Simonette de los Reyes.

Edith Nakpil EDITH NAKPIL †
Miss Philippines 1956


Merced Edith Nakpil was crowned Miss Philippines on December 23, 1955 at the Boys Town Auditorium. Her court was composed of Miss Luzon, Cely Gonzales; Miss Visayas, Helen Paulino; Miss Mindanao, Sylvia Rodriguez; and Lakambini ng Nayon, Nely Cruz. Edith relinquished the chance to represent the Philippines in the 1956 Miss Universe Beauty Pageant in Long Beach due to personal reasons. Edith Nakpil-Rabat was best remembered as the model who wore the Salvacion Higgin's (Slim's) classic signature terno creation.

Isabel Rodriguez ISABEL RODRIGUEZ

Isabel Escobar Rodriguez' road to Miss Universe started when Edith Nakpil forfeited her right to go to Miss Universe that year. Isabel was crowned on June 23rd at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila Hotel with the title of Miss Benevolence to replace Edith as the official representative of the Philippines to the Miss Universe Beauty Contest in Long Beach, California. There were 15 candidates for the title that included Annie Corrales who lost again the second time around.

ANNIE CORRALES
Miss Philippines 1957


Mary Ann Carmen Philipps Corrales clinched the Miss Philippines title on her third try and was crowned Miss Philippines during the Holiday in Manila festival at the Jai Alai Skyroom on June 23, 1957. The pageant was jointly sponsored by Casino Espanol of the Philippines and Elks Cerebral Palsy Educational and Fund Campaign Drive. Beside being Miss Mindanao to Yvonne de los Reyes in 1955, Annie was Miss Aviation 1955. She represented the Philippines in the Miss Universe Beauty Contest at the Long Beach Convention Center in California that year.

Miss Manila 1957


Carmen Soriano worked as a bit player at the LVN studios when she became Miss Manila of 1957. She also was selected as the Martine Carole of the Philippines that same year. Martine Carole was a French movie star famous for her sexy roles during the 50's & the'60s.

Carmen Remedios Tuason refused to go to Long Beach for the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant claiming parental objection instead she went to Belgium as part of her prize and attended the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Chuchay represented the Philippines in the first International Mind Sports Game in Beijing, China in October 2008, and in the 31st ASEAN Bridge Club Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in December 2009.

CRISTINA MATIAS
Miss Philippines 1959


Cristina Matias was crowned Miss Philippines on February 6, 1959 at the Philippine National Exposition Auditorium to represent the Philippines in the 1959 Miss Universe Beauty Contest. She passed up the opportunity to go to Long Beach when she faced a dilemma of whether to compete in Long Beach or stay in college. University rules forbid wearing a bathing suit in a beauty contest. She was a freshman student at the Philippine Women's University at that time. There was also a conflict with her schedule as a member of the Bayanihan Dance Company that had been signed up to perform on Broadway during that time.

Miss Press Photography of the Philippines 1959


Milagros Sumayao ( famously known as Mila Ocampo) was a starlet at the LVN studios at age 17 when she joined the Miss Press Photography contest. She married Von Serna †, also an actor and had 2 children with him - Snooky & Anton. Mila passed away on January 6, 2010 at the age of 67 due to emphysema.
